PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

On 29 September 2009, four powerful tsunamis generated by an undersea 8.0 magnitude (Richter) earthquake crashed into Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga destroying businesses, houses, beaches and coastal villages. The waves killed 189 people, 31 in American Samoa, 9 in Tonga and 149 in Samoa.

As a part of the rebuilding stage, the Samoan Government, Caritas Samoa and Digicel Samoa requested Habitat for Humanity New Zealand (HFHNZ) to oversee the rebuilding of approximately 100 Fale.  These Fale will be 90% funded by those organisations, and built under the project management leadership of HFHNZ and KEW Consult Ltd.

PROJECT SERVICES:

KEW Consult Ltd acted as the Project Management Unit for the rebuilding of Samoan fales in the tsunami affected areas.
